Aviation STEM classroom ideas

Use accessible questions about routes, motion, weather, and systems to spark a lesson.

Start with a map

Choose two locations and ask teams to compare routes. Students can measure distance, explain landmarks, and estimate travel time using a stated speed. A paper map or teacher-prepared diagram is enough to begin the discussion before using a simulator.

Investigate a change

Present a simple scenario in which one condition changes: a longer route, a lower ground speed, or a different planned heading. Ask students to predict the effect and explain their reasoning before calculating or testing an answer.

Finish with a short explanation

Use an exit prompt such as: what did your original plan assume, and which assumption mattered most? This keeps the activity focused on thinking. Select a task that matches the available time and students’ prior knowledge rather than trying to cover a full flight in one lesson.
