Connect aviation lessons to NGSS

Review the specific lesson, student task, and evidence of learning when planning standards-aligned instruction.

Start with the learning expectation

STEMPilot describes its curriculum as aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards. That is a useful starting point for a curriculum review, not a substitute for examining the documents for the program and grade level you plan to use.

Connect content, practice, and evidence

Identify the scientific idea students will investigate, the action they will take, and the evidence they will produce. For example, a flight investigation can ask students to make a prediction, gather observations, and explain whether their model accounts for the result. The objective should determine how the simulator is used.

Review the actual alignment documents

Ask for the relevant lesson plan and alignment sheet. Work with your instructional lead to match the materials to the class’s sequence and local requirements. Avoid claiming a particular performance expectation is covered until the lesson and its assessment have been reviewed.

Try it in your classroom

Build a lesson alignment note

Write the learning target in student-friendly language. List the task and the evidence students will submit. Compare those items with the program’s alignment document and identify any additional instruction needed.
