Make weather part of the mission

Use aviation to connect weather observations with planning, uncertainty, and decisions.

Weather changes the plan

Wind can change the relationship between airspeed and ground speed. Visibility and cloud conditions affect what a pilot can see. In the classroom, these relationships create an opportunity to ask why a route or estimated arrival time might need to change.

Separate evidence from assumption

Give teams a simplified set of weather conditions and ask them to explain which information matters to their mission. Introduce uncertainty by changing one condition. Students should identify the consequence and describe what additional information they would want before deciding.

Plan for evidence of learning

Before the activity, ask students to make a prediction and explain it. During the mission, have them record observations with units or clear labels. Afterward, compare the results with the plan and ask what changed in their reasoning. Adjust the complexity of the task to the students’ mathematical and scientific preparation.

Try it in your classroom

Compare a calm day and a headwind

Using a simple straight-line example, compare an aircraft traveling through the air at 120 knots with no wind and with a 20-knot direct headwind. Calculate the different ground speeds and travel times for 60 nautical miles. Treat this as a classroom model, not operational guidance.
