Aviation STEM for middle schools

Connect classroom mathematics and science through shared flight-planning challenges.

Give the calculation a purpose

Middle school learners can estimate a flight time, compare routes, and investigate why a result differs from a prediction. Keep units visible and ask teams to explain their assumptions. A short, well-defined mission can support a deeper discussion than a long flight with no question to answer.

Rotate the intellectual work

Have students alternate between planning, navigation, piloting, and observation. Give each role an output: a calculation, a map, a flight record, or a reflection. This prevents the most confident student from becoming the permanent pilot and helps you assess individual understanding.

A useful debrief

Ask every student to identify one decision that changed the result. Require a number, a measurement, or an observation to support the explanation, then let the crew revise its plan.

Prepare your implementation

Tell STEMPilot about your student ages, group size, available room, and session length. Request a proposal covering the appropriate simulator, curriculum, professional development, and support. Decide how students will participate away from the controls as part of the same lesson.
