Aviation STEM activities to try with your class

Three structured starting points for connecting flight to measurement, prediction, and explanation.

Activity one: compare two routes

Give teams a map with two airports and one optional waypoint. Measure a direct route and a route through the waypoint. Students calculate the difference, state the scale used, and explain why a longer route might still be worth discussing in a classroom scenario.

Activity two: estimate arrival time

Choose a constant ground speed and route distance. Students estimate the answer before using distance divided by speed. Change one value, ask for a prediction, then calculate again. Require units throughout and discuss what the simplified model excludes.

Activity three: brief and debrief

One team writes a mission plan for another team to interpret. After a supervised simulator activity, compare the intended instructions with what the receiving crew understood. Revise ambiguous language and discuss how communication can change a result.
