Plan a meaningful STEM project

Build a project around a question, student choices, evidence, and revision.

Start with a challenge worth explaining

A project should require students to make and defend decisions. A mission-planning task can ask teams to compare routes or improve a time estimate. Give the challenge enough structure to be achievable while leaving room for students to justify different approaches.

Define the evidence early

Decide what the final work should include: a plan, calculations, observations, and an explanation. Share assessment criteria before students begin. Individual reflections can reveal understanding that a group product alone may conceal.

Schedule the reflection

Reserve time to compare the outcome with the initial plan. Ask teams to identify one change they would make and the evidence supporting it. A revised plan often shows more about learning than the first successful attempt.
