Flight simulation in science classrooms

Use observable flight behavior to investigate models, variables, and evidence.

Design an investigation

Choose a question small enough to test with comparable starting conditions. Students should predict an outcome, change one variable, and record observations. The goal is an explanation supported by evidence, not simply an exciting flight.

Discuss the limits of the model

A simulator represents an aircraft and its environment. Invite students to explain which features are relevant to the investigation and which assumptions could affect the conclusion. Repeated trials provide a better basis for discussion than one unusually successful or unsuccessful attempt.

Assess the reasoning

Ask students to compare their prediction with the observed result. Look for appropriate units, a clear description of the variable, and an explanation of what they would test next.

Prepare your implementation
