Make the question drive the activity
A project needs more than an exciting piece of equipment. Give students a question that requires investigation, such as how to create a reliable flight-time estimate. The flight simulator becomes a tool for testing the plan rather than the reward at the end of a worksheet.
Make each student’s thinking visible
Assign planning, piloting, observation, and review responsibilities, then rotate roles. A group flight can produce a shared outcome while each student submits an individual explanation. Assess evidence, communication, and revision alongside the accuracy of calculations.
Plan for evidence of learning
Before the activity, ask students to make a prediction and explain it. During the mission, have them record observations with units or clear labels. Afterward, compare the results with the plan and ask what changed in their reasoning. Adjust the complexity of the task to the students’ mathematical and scientific preparation.
Create a mission portfolio
Collect the original route, calculations, predicted result, flight notes, and a revised plan. Ask students to explain one change using evidence. Use the same question before and after the mission to make shifts in understanding visible.
